Patient safety goes mobile with Epocrates

While researching some ideas regarding mobile device usage at the point of care, I came across some great videos featuring Epocrates. Epocrates is a company that develops clinical information and decision support tools for mobile devices, some of which are even available to medical professionals free of charge.

The content provided with these tools is developed by physicians and pharmacists and is continuously updated to ensure accuracy, which makes them all that more valuable to front line healthcare workers.

The first video is an interview with a Doctor that outlines how she is using a mobile device and the Epocrates software to reduce and prevent medical errors She mentions that this is of great concern as 1.5 million medication errors take place in the United States each year. These include errors regarding wrong dosage, wrong drug and drug interactions issues.

The second video is a little more geek sheik and includes a demo of Epocrates on the iPhone. I was particularly impressed with the drug identification application in which a Clinician can determine what drug a patient is taking based on a physical description of the pill it self.
