Top 5 RFID priorities for hospital implementations

This week in Healthcare IT News: At the inaugural RFID in Healthcare Conference, produced by RFID Journal, on Jan 23rd, Awarepoint CEO Jason Howe is set to provide hospitals with the key criteria that should be considered when implementing RFID projects.

Howe believes RFID projects should be:

  1. Room-level accurate: the location of assets within hospitals needs to be accurate at the room level of detail.
  2. Minimally invasive: and should not be disruptive to hospital workflow or interfere with any other wireless networks within the hospital.
  3. Hospital-wide: to gain maximum economics of scale.
  4. Provide immediate returns. The tactical return on investment should be upfront.
  5. Adaptable: “Hospitals are one of the most dynamic environments. So, the system has to be adaptable by the minute.”

Howe believes that hospitals are past the “early adopter stage” of RFID use, that by 2010 most hospitals will be doing something toward RFID implementation, and by 2012 those that have not will feel the impact of not doing so.
